Marjorie Ethel (Marj) Bassett, 101 years of age, found her heavenly reward on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. Marj was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 13, 1908, the daughter of the late John and Ethel (Harrington) Barker. She was raised on West 126th Street in a house that her Father built and where she later raised her own family. She graduated from John Marshall High School in 1926. On June 26, 1927 she married Howard H. Bassett and they enjoyed 58 years together. Marj and Howard built a new home in 1957 in Strongsville where she lived for 44 years. She was a true matriarch and it was always clear that family was most important. In the 1940's she and Howard built a summer cottage on Sandusky Bay, where her family still enjoys summer weekends today. She was a great cook and enjoyed many hobbies, including writing poetry, knitting and crocheting, and oil painting, traveling and making jewelry from rocks and minerals collected during their many travels. She loved boating and fishing on Sandusky Bay. For her 97th birthday her family and friends fulfilled one of her life-long dreams by giving her a Caribbean cruise. Marj was an active member of Highland Christian Church in Cleveland and Hilltop Christian Church in Mantua. She also enjoyed being an active member of the Strongsville Senior Center. In the past 15 years or so she knitted and crocheted over 50 afghans and baby blankets for her family and others in need, Marj is survived by her daughters Charlotte (Dale) Parsons of Donnellson, Iowa and Lois Summerlin of Mantua, Ohio, her son Raymond of Sandusky, Ohio and daughter-in-law, Gertrude Bassett of Olmstead Falls, Ohio and Brother-in-Law, Robert Franks, of Elyria, Ohio. She also leaves 11 Grandchildren, 19 Great-Grandchildren and many Great-Great-Grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by her beloved husband Howard in 1985, Son Ralph, Brother Alfred Barker, Sister-In-Law Beatrice Barker, SIster Doris Yeend, Brother-in-Law Richard Yeend, Sister Evelyn Franks and Son-in-Law Allen Summerlin. Calling hours will be Monday from 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua. Her funeral service will be held Tuesday May 11, 2010 11:00 A.M. at the Hilltop Christian Church, W. Prospect St., Mantua with Rev. Jeff Jackson officiating. A dinner will be served at the Church immediately after the services. Mrs. Bassett will then be laid to rest at North Royalton Cemetery.
