Leland E. Bassett Jr.
Portsmouth - Leland Earl Bassett, Jr., 88, of the 3800 block of Shannon Rd. passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018 in a local hospital. A native of Portsmouth, he was born on August 16, 1929 to the late Leland and Louise Bassett, Sr.; and retired as a design engineer from Newport News Shipbuilding. Leland was a charter member and past master of Western Branch Masonic Lodge #189; member of the Portsmouth Shrine Club, Scottish Rite and the Khedive Shriners Hillbilly Unit. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lieselotte K. Bassett and his two sisters, Elizabeth Catlett and Marjorie Scott.
He is survived by his son, Phillip H. Bassett and his wife Rebecca; two granddaughters, Briana Camden and her husband Jonathan and Tessa Fly and her husband Ryan; and four great grandchildren, Parker and Conner Fly and Isaac and Noah Camden.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, August 1, 2018 in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 8 PM.
