William Hastings Bassett III
William Hastings Bassett III, 86, father of a Rye Brook man and a resident of
Scarsdale, died Sept. 18, 2007 at his home.
He was born in Waterbury, Conn. Dec. 14, 1920 to Helen Dean Bassett and
William Hastings Bassett, Jr.
He married the former Cecyl Hudson Smith in 1944.
He graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1939 and attended Georgia Institute
of Technology for two years before leaving to enter the Naval Aviation Cadet
Program.
His pilot's wings were awarded at Pensacola, Fla.
After the war, he attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and then Pace
College where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree cum
laude.
During World War II, he was a pilot in the Naval Air Transport Service in the
Asia-Pacific Campaign and won victory medals.
Mr. Bassett was assigned to Naval Air Command in Seattle, Wash. and flew
transport planes to the Aleutian Islands.
He was an accountant with the Anaconda Co. and C.I.T. Financial Corporation.
He was manager of the Stock Transfer Department of Cities Service Co. until
the company moved to Tulsa, Okla. at which time he transferred to the Morgan
Guaranty Trust Co. Stock Transfer Department and was an officer there until
his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Bassett, a descendant of William Brewster, was a member of the New
Hampshire Mayflower Society.
He was also a member of the Scarsdale Golf Club and a 50-year member of the
Manursing Island Club.
Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by two sons, William Hastings
Bassett IV and Douglas Sydney Bassett and his wife Nancy H. Bassett of Rye
Brook; two granddaughters, Kristin Louise Bassett and Kimberly Ann Bassett;
and a brother, Dean Winslow Bassett.
A sister, Louise Bassett Rugg, predeceased him.
