Agnes Bassett, 67
Retired Registered Nurse
Agnes M. (Harney) Bassett, a registered nurse, died of liver cancer
Monday at her home in Needham. She was 67.
After graduating from the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing in
1945, Mrs. Bassett joined the hospital’s nursing staff. She left in 1953 as
head surgical nurse. In the 1970s, she was a part-time nurse at Glover
Memorial Hospital in Needham.
For more than 15 years, Mrs. Bassett was a director of and a volunteer
for the Needham Community Council, a citizen organization helping residents in
various ways. She also led the council’s publicity and fund-raising efforts
for a number of years.
Mrs. Bassett served as a Needham Town Meeting member for two decades
and was on the committee to establish the St. Joseph’s parish council. She
also founded the Great Plain Squares in 1974.
She leaves her husband, Walter H.; a son, Walter H. J. of Evansville,
Ind.; a brother, John Harney of Roslindale; four sisters, Dorothy Flaherty of
South Boston, Frances Moriarty of Abington, Eleanor Nee of Quincy and Marjorie
Hoenshell of Stown, and a grandchild.
A funeral Mass will be said today at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church,
Needham, Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham.
