CHATHAM - Doris "Dolly" (Dunphy) Bassett Rumazza
CHATHAM - Doris "Dolly" (Dunphy) Bassett Rumazza, 95, formerly of Chatham and
Dover, N.H., died Sunday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.
She was the wife of Benjamin H. Bassett, who died in 1976, and O.L. "Rusty"
Rumazza, who died in 2002. Mrs. Rumazza was born in Freeport, Maine, and
graduated from the Farmington Normal School and the University of Maine, Orono
Class of 1932, where she was a member of the women's basketball team. While in
Chatham, she taught fifth grade for many years. She was a member of Del
Kappa Gamma, an international honor society for women educators.
At 55, she made up for lost time with trips all over the U.S., including
Hawaii, and 15 trips to Europe. She loved combining education and travel with
the Elderhostel Program. She visited many colleges and universities here and
abroad.
She was an avid swimmer and skier and cross-country skied and canoed into her
early 80's. She enjoyed following women's basketball, quilting and was a
member of the Cocheco Quilters in Dover. She knit and did craft projects until
recently.
Survivors include a son, Benjamin Bassett of Chatham, a daughter, Sally S.
Dickenson of Orleans; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation is 11 a.m. today at the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road,
Chatham, followed by a memorial service at noon in the funeral home.
