Reuben S. Bassett
CHATHAM ? Reuben S. Bassett, 97, died Friday at the Highland Health Center in
Cheshire, Conn. He was the husband of the late Gladys J. (Rosser) Bassett.
Mr. Bassett was born, raised, and educated in Chatham. He was a manager for a
grocery store before joining the Army and serving during World War I
served in the European theater where he earned four Bronze Star Medals; he
also served in the Asiatic and China campaigns, where he earned one Bronze
Star Medal.
After the war he returned to Chatham, where he met Gladys and they married and
settled in South Yarmouth. Reuben became a manager for the Yarmouth A&P
grocery store and worked there till founding his own grocery store in South
Yarmouth; he later opened and operated these two businesses for many years
until their retirement.
He lived in South Yarmouth until a recent move to Cheshire to be closer to his
granddaughter, Jennifer Carnovale.
Besides his granddaughter, Jennifer, he is survived by a son, Mark Bassett;
and two daughters, Rosalind Lukasewski and Jane Pendergraft. He was
predeceased by a daughter, Gail Carnovale. Reuben is also survived by nine
other grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will begin on Wednesday at 10 am at
the Chandler Grey Cemetery in West Yarmouth. Visiting hours will be Tuesday
evening from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Coutinho-Boisse Funeral Home, 678 Main St.,
Harwich.
