Howard Bassett Sr., 65
Grafton - Howard D. Bassett Sr., 65, of 24 North St., died last night in his home after a long illness. His wife, Mary Jean (Fleming) Bassett, died in 1973. He leaves two sons, Howard D. Bassett Jr. of Keene, N.H., and John W. Bassett of Grafton; three daughters, Laura T. Toomey of Holden, Cynthia L. Maurer of Worcester, and Martha L. Bassett of Grafton; two sisters, Ruth Coates of Auburn, and Helen Bassett of Worcester; and four grandchildren.
He was born in Worcester, son of Fred E. and Myrtle (Rathbun) Bassett, and he lived here 39 years. He graduated from the former Commerce High School, Worcester, in 1946.
Mr. Bassett was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a field lineman in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater.
Mr. Bassett was an estimate assigner at New England Telephone Co. in Worcester, where he worked for 42 years, retiring recently.
He was a member of The Evangelical Congregational Church of Grafton and Electa-Rebekah Lodge of Odd Fellows in North Grafton.
Mr. Bassett was a former longtime member and official of Mohegan Council, Boy Scouts of America, in Worcester. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 107 in Grafton for many years, and was active in the Boy Scouts for most of his life.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Robert C. Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Flowers may be sent, or contributions made to the Memorial Fund of Mohegan Coucil, Boy Scouts of America, 19 Harvard St., Worcester, 01608.
