    Notes
    • The Late Mr. W. Bassett
      A Rosewood Pioneer

The late Mr. Wm. Bassett, whose death was briefly reported last week, was a well-known and highly respected resident of the Rosewood district for many years (writes our correspondent). He had reached the age of 77 years, and for the past six and a h half years had not enjoyed good health. He was born at Acckington, near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England. In 1874, in the boat Ophelia, he came out to Queensland. For six months he worked at Moggill, for the late Mr. Hargreaves, and afterwards helped to build the first railway line from Brisbane to Ipswich. For about two years he worked at the South Brisbane cemetery, and also at the Brisbane Gas works for two years. For the benefit of his health, he decided to go on the land. He came to the Rosewood Scrub in the year 1879, where he remained until his death ? a period of about 45 years.
The late Mr. Bassett was a member of the Rosewood Rifle Club when their shoots were held in the late Mr. J. Lane?s paddocks. He was also on the committee of the Ashwell State School at one time, a life member of the Rosewood A. and H. Association, and a foundation member of the P.A.F.S. O.A. Lodge.
The late Mr. Bassett was married three times, his first and second wives having predeceased him by 38 and 37 years respectively. He is survived by a widow, and family of 10, who are all grown up. The family consists of seven sons and three daughters ? namely: Messrs. F. Bassett (Branch Creek, Gayndah), G. Bassett (Crows Nest), Clifton Bassett (Binjour Plateau, via Gayndah), John Bassett (New Zealand), Harold D. Bassett, Edward Bassett, and Walter D. Bassett (Rosewood), Mrs. Chas. Watts (Rosewood), Mrs. W. Thorn (Brisbane), and Miss Mary Bassett (Rosewood). There are 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One daughter predeceased her father by there years, and one son was killed at the war. He also leaves one sister (Mrs. Jackson, of Ipswich) and one brother (Mr. T. Bassett, Toowoomba).
Prior to the departure of the funeral from Ashwell on Saturday afternoon for the Tallogalla cemetery, a short service was conducted at the residence by Rev. T. Ashworth, of the Lanefield Baptist Church. The cortege was a very lengthy one. Six Past Master of the P.A.F.S.O.A. Lodge acted a pall-bearers. The services at the graveside was conducted by Rev. C.A. Capern, of the Rosewood Congregational Church, and Bro. H. Capern, a Past Master of the P.A. F.S O.A., read the service of the lodge. Numerous messages of condolence have been received by the bereaved family.
