Gary R. Bassett
Bassett, Gary, R. – Age 47, died May 1, 1996 in San Diego, CA. He struggled for his life, but when the time came, he chose to go quietly and courageously. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Flint for family and friends on May 19, 1996 at Central Methodist Church (Ballenger at Mackin); Visitation at 3 PM and service at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wellness HIV/AIDS Services of Flint. Gary was born in Flint on April 30, 1949, graduated from Southwestern High School and attended Abilene Christian College and UM-Flint. He worked at Flint Osteopathic Hospital (1970-1975) and eventually became Executive Director of Genesee Medical Corporation until 1989 when he moved to San Diego. There he owned Whoopdee Doo Gift Store until his health began to fail. Gary will be sadly and deeply missed by those whose lives he touched so lovingly and gently. He marched to his own drummer, yet never lost step with others. Left to celebrate his memory are parents, Bud (Peg) Bassett and Jean (Don) Williams; brother, Rob (Leah) Williams; sisters, Deb Bassett and Barb (john Dunnill; step-brother, Kevin McAlister; step-sisters, Yolanda McAlister, Melanie (Bill) Anderson and Sheila DuPlanty; 6 nieces and nephews. Extended family Karen Gould, Darren McKenney, Elane (Charlie) Schultz, Jan Heddins and Karen Dickenson, many cousins, aunts and uncles. Due to the fragile health of Gary’s Father, Bud Bassett, the doctor and family request he not be told of Gary’s death at this time.
