William Bassett
Fell asleep at the home of his daughter at 12:45 p.m. March 22, 1904, William Bassett, aged 86 years, nine months and 24 days. Although naturally possessed of a hardy, rugged constitution Mr. Bassett had succumbed to his weight of years and for months past had been in a very feeble condition. The final summons was fully expected.
In the death of William Bassett, Albion loses one of her best citizens. He was a man whose word no man ever doubted and who stood for the right in all things. He was born in the county of Kent, England, May 28, 1817. He came with his parents to the state of New York when young, and later, about the years 1837, settled in Albion. He was married to Miss Charlotte Johns soon after coming to Albion. Mrs. Bassett died April 3, 1885, aged 73 years. The surviving members of the family are three sons, Alfred, William H. and Thomas R.; and three daughters, Mrs. Charles Stanley, Mrs. William Fewkes and Mrs. Ellen Standring, all residing in Albion or in the immediate vicinity. Upon locating in Albion, some sixty five years ago, Mr. Bassett began the business of manufacturing brick, an occupation in which he greatly excelled. It is a noteworthy fact that two of his early apprentices, W.H. John and William Lines, are now still living. The brick were usually manufactured on the spot where they were to be used, and many of the first brick made by him are still piled up in the residences of town and country, monuments of his industry. The funeral services will be held at the residence of Mrs. Standring this afternoon at 2:30. The deceased had been many years a member of the C.P. Church. The kindly face of William Bassett will be much missed in Albion.
