Obituary: 10 Mar 1976

The death of Mrs. Cecil J. Bassett (Oletha P. Newell), 58, Chur
Street, Hoytville, has been ruled a suicide by Dr. Roger Peatee, Wood County
coroner. Dr. Peatee said death was caused by acute heart stoppage from the
shock of the cold water rather than drowning. Mrs. Bassett's body was
recovered from a pond on the Oil Center Road early Tuesday morning by Wood
County sheriff's deputies. She had been missing from her home since 7 p.m.
Monday. The funeral for Mrs. Bassett is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Hartley
Funeral Home, McComb, with burial in McComb Union Cemetery. Mrs. Bassett was
born March 6, 1918, in Putnam County to Mr. and Mrs. Orla Newell (Nellie
Fisher). She married Mr. Bassett on Jan. 6, 1951 and he survives, as does her
mother in McComb. Other survivors include a son, Lee, Deshler; two daughters,
Kay and Diane, both at home; three sisters, Mrs. Eugene (Grace) Leader,
McComb, and Mrs. Richard (Naomi) Snavely and Mrs. Gene (Guyneth) Crates, both
of Findlay, and a granddaughter. Mrs. Bassett was a member of the Hoytville
United Methodist Church, where she served as janitor and a member of the
Hoytville United Women. The family suggests that any tributes be in the form
of contributions to the church. Interment will be in the McComb Union
Cemetery.
