- Marvin was a 1938 graduate of the Kinmundy High School. He lived in the
LaFayette Bassett home place and farmed part of the land. He also worked for the
Egg Plant in Farina, Illinois. He was correspondent for the Kinmundy Express
newspaper. He had held several offices in the township of Foster, including
that of the Sandy Branch Cemetery, which by the help of him and others in the
community, is kept in beautiful condition. It is one of the most beautiful
cemeteries in the state of Illinois.

ALMA - James Marvin Bassett, 87, of Alma, died at 2:25 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17,
2007, at Salem Township Hospital in Salem. He was born Sept. 30, 191
Foster Township, son of James Arnold and Florence (Osborne) Bassett. He
married Nellie Fern Belcher on May 4, 1944, at Christian Church in Patoka, and
she survives in Alma.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bassett is survived by two daughters, Donna M.
McWhirter and husband Gary of Kalkaska, Mich., and Marshal L. Oertwig a
husband Don of St. Peter; three sons, James O. Bassett and wife Joyce of
Winston, Ga., Robert C. Bassett and wife Etta of Kinmundy and Brian D. Bassett
and wife Cindy of Kinmundy; a sister, Ruth A. Williams and husband Richard of
Farina; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bassett was an Army veteran, having served during World War II. He served
the Alma Christian Church as an elder and teacher. He was a 50-year member of
the Marion County Farm Bureau, a township trustee and a three-term supervisor,
also serving five years as chairman of the Marion County Board of Supervisors.
He worked for 25 years as an inspector for the United States Department of
Agriculture and served man years on his favorite chore, caring for Sandy
Branch Cemetery. He was a columnist for the Kinmundy Express for nearly 20
years, writing the Sandy Branch West column. He was also a member of American
Legion Post 519 of Kinmundy. He was a farmer, a genealogist and a graduate of
Kinmundy High School.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Alma Christian Church, with Randy
Vanausdall officiating. Interment will follow at Sandy Branch Cemete
Alma, with graveside military rites accorded by the Kinmundy American Legion.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in
Salem.
