- Leighton was physically unable to join the military. He retired from
the McCleary Fire Dept after 25 years. He retired from Simpson Timber Company
in 1976 after 37 years. Leighton and Ann traveled extensively after his
retirement. They spent their winters in southern California and their summers
in McCleary, Washington.

Leighton A. Bassett
Leighton A. Bassett, 65, died Wednesday, March 12, in McCleary. He was born Oct. 16, 1914, in Mena, Ark., and lived in McCleary for the past 39 years. He was employed by Simpson Timber Co. in McCleary for 35 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Mena, a long-time active member of the McCleary Volunteer Fire Department and at one time served on the McCleary School Board. He is survived by his wife, Ann, at the family home; three sons, Don, San Clemente, Calif., Ken, Lacey and Mike, McCLeary; one daughter, Mrs. Karen Olson, Elma, and 13 grandchildren. One son, Gerald, died in 1975. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Whiteside Chapel, Elma, with the Rev. William Self officiating. Vault interment will follow in the McCleary Cemetery. The family?s favorite benevolence is the McCLeary Volunteer Fire Department.
