Joan Ann “Sophia” Spurgetis
Joan Ann "Sophia" Spurgetis, 81, of Moline, died June 13, 2008, at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehab Center, Rock Island.Her visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, with Trisagion prayer service at 7 p.m., at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline, with services, 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. The Reverend John Lucas will officiate. Burial will follow at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.Joan Ann was born May 29, 1927, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Lewis A. and Rose Marie Holly Bassett. She married Gust G. Spurgetis July 16, 1972.Joan loved music, gardening, her family, the Ya-Ya's, and her dogs. She worked at the US Weapons Command on the Rock Island Arsenal for 17 years, retiring in 1972. Joan was a member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline and Moline American Legion No. 246.She is survived by her daughter, Soteria (Jack Riley) Wingerter, Rock Island; son-in-law, Lewis Wingerter, Moline; grandsons, Christopher Wingerter, Moline, Michael Hulslander, Washington D.C.; godparents, Gordon and Helen Smith, Davenport; brother-in-law, Soc Spurgetis, East Moline; and her friends, Helen Kouris, Josh and Mary Benhart, Dave and Judy Emmert, Jessica, and Stephanie Hodson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Fawn Rose Oliver; and two brothers.
