- Elizabeth Bassett, Community volunteer, 92

Elizabeth Armstrong Bassett, 92, of Lansdowne, a former office manager and
community volunteer, died from a series of strokes May 16 at Broomall
Presbyterian Village, a retirement community in Broomall. Mrs. Bassett grew up
in Narberth. After graduating from Lower Merion High School, she worked in
stores in Suburban Square in Ardmore. Then she was office manager for a tile
company in Ardmore for several years. In 1951, she married Henry L. Bassett.
They met at a Presbyterian Church group for singles over 30. In 1975, she was
a founder of the Meals on Wheels program in Delaware County. For the next 25
years she helped deliver meals to the homebound. She and her husband al
volunteered at Presbyterian Hospital. They enjoyed family road trips wh
their children were young. The couple's later travels abroad included a trip
to Ireland, fulfilling Mrs. Bassett's dream of visiting the land of her
ancestors. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and The Lansdowne
Presbyterian Church, and she was an avid stamp collector. Mrs. Basse
survived by a daughter, J. Eliza; a son, William; a sister; and two
grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at
Broomall Presbyterian Village auditorium, 146 Marple Rd., Broomall. Friends
may call at 1 p.m. Mrs Bassett donated her body to science.
