James M. Bassett Sr., 94
ATHOL - James M. Bassett Sr., 94, formerly of Canal Street, died Sunday in
Quabbin Valley Healthcare nursing home. His wife, Hazel M. (Newell) Bassett,
died in 1955. He leaves two sons, James M. Bassett Jr. of Georgetown, S.C.,
and Norman Bassett of Athol; a daughter, Helen Jewett of Athol; eight
grandchildren, including Elizabeth M. Thompson of Athol, with whom he lived
for many years; and 14 great-grandchildren. Born in Readsboro, Vt., son of
James M. and Dora B. (Lewis) Bassett, he attended Readsboro and Athol public
schools. During World War II, Mr. Bassett was an Athol Civil Defense
volunteer. He was a self-employed carpenter, electrician and automobile
mechanic. Previously, he worked at General Electric Co., Lynn. A graveside
service will be held at 11 a.m. today in Jones Cemetery, Orange. There are no
calling hours. Witty Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange, is directing
funeral arrangements.
