Vernell Bass Allen
TIMBERLAKE ? Vernell Bass Allen, 95, of Timberlake, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion after a lengthy decline in health.
Mrs. Allen was a longtime resident of Semora before moving to Timberlake. She resided at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living and Roxboro Nursing Center for the past two years.
Mrs. Allen was born on October 2, 1918 at her family home in Halifax County, Virginia. She was the youngest child of the late Willingham Bass and Elizabeth Churchill Bass. She was married to the late Thomas Scott Allen, Sr. She was also predeceased by her sister Frances Bass Jordan and her brother Charles Willingham Bass.
Mrs. Allen served as the postmaster in Semora until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of Semora Baptist Church and held several roles over the years including treasurer, pianist, and Sunday School teacher.
She is survived by her two children Thomas Scott Allen, Jr. and wife Ellen of Cary and daughter Dr. Margaret Karen (Kay) Allen of Timberlake. Mrs. Allen is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Patrick Scott Allen of Raleigh and Jonathan Thomas Allen and wife Haley of Holly Springs and her special buddy Sophie. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Mrs. Allen's caretaker and friend, Sylvia Kidd, for her loving care over the past two years. They also wish to thank the staffs at Hock Family Pavilion, Roxboro Nursing Center, and Cambridge Hills Assisted Living for their compassionate care of Mrs. Allen while she was a resident of each facility.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 22 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at Brooks and White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter. The graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 pm in the Semora Baptist Church cemetery.
Because she was an avid gardener, flowers are appropriate or donations may be made to Timberlake Fire Department, P.O. Box 25, Timberlake, N.C. 27583 or to a charity of your choice in her memory.
