Viola L. (Thuot) Bessette
VIOLA L. (THUOT) BESSETTE, 77, of Milford Street, New Bedford, a retired local professional singer, and a teacher's aide, died Tuesday at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, after an illness. She was the wife of the late Raymond A. Bessette. Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Edgar and Amanda (Roberge) Thuot, she was a lifelong resident of New Bedford. An avid music lover, Mrs. Bessette was employed as a professional singer for many years before retiring in the mid-1980s. She was the organist and soloist for the Unitarian Church and St. Joseph's Church in New Bedford and was a choir member of St. Anthony's Church, New Bedford. Having studied with Jacqueline Cobert, she performed as lead soprano with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. She also was a teacher's aide for 15 years with the Title I Program for the New Bedford School Department at Carney Academy in the 1970s and 1980s.After retiring, she became the caretaker for her great-aunt, Evelyn Bourgeois, who is 103. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, New Bedford, where she was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and the Couples Club. She was also a member of the Association of Canadian Americans in New Bedford. She was a licensed real-estate broker and enjoyed gardening. She leaves a daughter, Dianne M. Bessette of Acushnet, Mass.; three sons, John P. Bessette of South Kingstown, David R. Bessette of New Bedford and Donald M. Bessette of Brockton, Mass.; a brother, C. Gerald Thuot of Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from Brooklawn Funeral Home, 15 Irvington Court, New Bedford, with a funeral Mass at 10 in St. Joseph-St. Therese's Church, Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery Number 2, New Bedford.
