Bassett-Burdick
Miss Rachel Burdick, daughter of Rev. Clayton A. Burdick of Main St., and Leon Bassett, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Bassett of Alfred, N.Y., were married yesterday afternoon at 5:30 at the bride?s home before a gathering of immediate relatives and friends of the families. The marriage ceremony was performed by Mr. Burdick. Miss Ruth Burdick, sister of the bride, was the bridesmaid and the groom was attended by Julian Crandall of Ashaway. Miss Louis Wells of Ashaway played the wedding march.
The bride was attractive in white taffeta and carried a bride?s bouquet of roses, while the bridesmaid wore yellow chiffon over satin, carrying Aaron Ward roses. Refreshments were served after the service.
Early in the evening Mr. and Mrs. Bassett left for Boston for a few days? stay at the completion of which they will go to Worcester, Mass., to make their home in a furnished apartment.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett are graduates of Alfred College, class of 1916, Mr. Bassett now being producing engineer of the refractories department of the Norton Co. of Worcester. Westerly, R.I. Sun. Jan 13th.

Leon's first job after school was with the Norton Company in Worcester,
Massachusetts in 1916. He then worked for the Whitney Company of Winchendon,
Massachusetts as a ceramist. He went to Rockford, Illinois in 1927 to work for
the Roper Corporation where he developed colored and white enamels for stoves.
He moved to Milton, Wisconsin to work for the Burdick Corporation doing
research. He then moved back to Alfred, New York in 1932, becoming the plant
manager of Alfred Telephone and Telegraph. In 1938 he joined the sta
Alfred University.
Leon Burdette Bassett, 1892-1973
Leon was born in Alfred, Allegany Co., NY, the second child of William Henry
and Myrta Bliss. He grew up in Alfred and graduated from Alfred Academy in
1912. He went on to Alfred University, where his parents had also attended,
and studied Ceramics. He graduated in 1916, and two years later, he married
Rachel Burdick of Westerly, RI. They had two children, Harriet Eloise, born
July 12, 1920, and William H., born July 22, 1925. Leon was an engineer and
did research for companies in Massachusetts, Illinois, and Wisconsin. During
the Depression, he was unable to find work and returned to Alfred with his
family. He took a job as a line man with the telephone company. He soon began
working at Alfred University, where he taught spectroscopy for many years. In
1945, his wife Rachel died, and he later remarried Virginia Foster of Alfred.
He received an honorary doctorate in professional ceramic engineering in 1950.
He died in Alfred, July 19, 1973.
