John Devere Bassett, 69, of Monterey, a retired PBX system repairman, died of
cancer Tuesday at his home.
Born Aug. 9 1927 in Los Angeles, he had lived in Monterey nearly all his life.
Mr. Bassett served in the Navy during World War II and worked for Pacific Bell
for 34 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday
Saints, American Legion Post No. 591 in Seaside, the Coast Guard Auxiliary,
the Civil Air Patrol, and the Society for Creative Anachronism.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald of San Diego and Robin of Montana; a
daughter, Laurel Bassett of Anchorage, Alaska; two stepsons, Michael
Brassfield of Monterey and James Brassfield of Salem, Oregon; a stepdaughter,
Sharon Lecalmaita of Seaside; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Paul Mortuar
The family suggests that contributions be sent to the Hospice of the Central
Coast, PO Box 1798, Monterey 93942.
