Lysle Bassett
Lysle E. Bassett Jr., 84, of Camillus, NY, passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Syracuse NY, on July 7, 1938 to the late Lysle E. and Edith Mae (Sheller) Bassett. He grew up in Skaneateles and Marcellus, NY, and graduated from Marcellus High School in 1957. He served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Mead, MD in the 526 MP Co. which played a part in keeping order during the march on the Capitol. He retired from NYS Department of Corrections (Auburn, NY) in 1991, after 30 years of service, where he was taken hostage during the November 4, 1970 prison riot.
Lysle's love of many sports inspired him to help form the Skaneateles Softball League in 1967, of which he served as president for seven years. He also managed the Morris' Grill team for a time, and coached youth girls' softball for many years through the Auburn Recreation Center in the 70's and early 80's. He served as the president of the Auburn Correction Officers Bowling League for four years, taking three teams to the Lilac Tournament in Rochester, NY.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Esther (Stagnitta) Bassett; two daughters, Kelli (Chris) LaMontagne, and Janil (Luke) Wilson; six grandchildren, Aimee, Morgan, Stephanie, Ryan, Kennedi and Ian; siblings Francis, June and Marlene Bassett, as well as Dolores Coleman, and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, Richard Bassett, and sister, Virginia Curtis.
Family and friends may call from 9:30 AM ? 11:00 AM Friday, September 30, 2022 at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, 2601 Milton Ave. Solvay, NY with Funeral Services immediately following at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse.
