Edward S. Bassett
CLEVELAND, March 10 - Edward S. Bassett, industrialist who was
prominent here in civic and cultural affairs, died last night at the age of 83.
He was a former treasurer of The Cleveland Leader, now The News. The
newspaper was founded by his grandfather, Edwin Cowles.
In 1912 Mr. Bassett was one of the organizers of Bassett & Smit
consultants in management, specializing in cost accounting. Seven years later
he became secretary-treasurer of the Cowles Chemical Company, manufacturers of
detergents and other industrial chemicals.
He was general manager of the chemical company in 1926, and four years
later was elected president. He served as president until 1938 when he was
named chairman of the board. Mr. Bassett retired from that post in 1941, but
retained membership on the board of directors until last year
He was one of the founders of the Cleveland Chamber Music Society and
formerly served as its treasurer.
His widow, a son and daughter survive.
