  Notes	The History of Angelina County, Texas (1846-1991) Lufkin Genealogical and Historical Society Bassett Joseph Copes and Lela Florence Hamby Bassett Joseph Copes was born October 6, 1870 at Petra, Saline County, Missouri and was the eldest son of Henry Francis Copes and Cynthia Jeanette Bassett. He moved to Texas with his parents in a covered wagon about 1877. His daughters recall that he said that he walked most of the way, even though he was only 7 years old. He grew up on the family farm on Stovall Prairie, east of Diboll. It was at Emporia that a young lady named Florence Lela Hamby, born 1874, caught his eye. They later renewed acquaintance when....
