      Brentwood - Dorothy Hazel (Pratt) Gatchell Bassett, 91, of 70 Pleasant St., Epping, N.H., died Nov. 4, 2009, at the Rockingham Nursing Home after a short period of failing health.
      Born March 19, 1918, in Milford, Mass., she was the only child of the late Everett N. and Florence Hazel (Lavers) Pratt, of Freeport, Maine.
      Dorothy had lived in Epping the past six years. She lived in East Baldwin, East Parsonsfield, Cornish, and Freeport, Maine from 1936 to 1948, with her husband, John C. Gatchell. She lived in West Milton from 1948 to 1955, and she lived with her second husband, John Bassett, from 1955 to 1984.
      Dorothy was a graduate of Freeport High School in Maine and studied at Boston University and the University of New Hampshire. She played cello in the Brunswick Symphony Orchestra in the 1930s and 40s. She taught music in the Milton School District for eight years, in the mid 1950s to mid 60s and 18 years at the Farmington School District in the mid 50s to mid 70s. Dorothy was a Milton Girl Scout Leader in the 1950s.
      She was an accomplished pianist, playing in many venues, and continued to teach private piano lessons for many years after retirement. She was a member of the NH Music Educator's Association and the National Education Association. After retirement, she worked as a volunteer at the Milton Community Action Center, helping with the administration of Meals-on-Wheels, as well as delivering food, transporting Strafford County citizens to and from doctor's appointments, and as a dental assistant.
      She was predeceased by her two husbands, John C. Gatchell, in 1948, and John L. Bassett, in 1984.
      Surviving members of her family include her children, J. Bruce Gatchell and wife, Elaine, of Epping, John Johnson, Joyce (Johnson) Rabbitt, John Norman Bassett and wife, Patricia of Turner, Maine, Robert C. Bassett and wife, Carol, of Vienna, Maine, and daughter-in-law, Beverly McCarthy. Her grandchildren include Paul Gatchell of Epping, Ryan Gatchell of Sunapee, Mary Gatchell of New York City, N.Y., Alicia (Bassett) Palombo of Haverhill, Mass., Steven Bassett of Durham, Maine, Justin Bassett of Burlington, Vt., and Jill Bassett of Rochester, and her great-grandchildren, Brooke Gatchell, Noah Jones, Emma Bassett, Cyron Bassett, Anna Gatchell, Hayden Bassett, Spenser Peavey, Joselyn Montgomery, and John Johnson, Jr.
      Dorothy wished to profoundly thank her beloved family members, friends, and the many former students, for their presence in her life.

      A Celebration of Life will be held at the Milton Community Church Fellowship Hall, 7 Steeple St., Milton, N.H., on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m.
