Stove Company Veteran Dies, Apoplexy Fatal to E.J. Bassett, ag

E. J. Bassett, 73, of 1302 Stockbridge avenue, oldest living employee
of the Kalamazoo Stove and Furnace Company, died Sunday at Bronson hospital
following a stroke of apoplexy and an extended illness.
Construction of first buildings of the stove company was started in
1901 and Mr. Bassett began installation of the power plant Jan. 2, 1902 and
continued his employment as a mechanical engineer in charge of the power
division of the company for 40 years. He was honored with a few of the stove
company's oldest employees at a dinner given at the Park-American hotel two
years ago about the time of his retirement.
Mr. Bassett was born in Three Rivers July 1, 1870, the son of Louis H.
and Eliza Bassett and had been a resident of Kalamazoo 43 year
Surviving are the wife; a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney
Beam, Lawton; two granddaughters, Bonnie Lou and Patty Beam; two sisters, a
twin, Mrs. Guy Bodley, Wolcotville, Ind. and Mrs. Irvin Kessler of Columbus
City, Ind.; three nephews and one niece.
Funeral services will be held at the Langeland chapel at 3 Tuesday
afternoon, the Rev. Richard D. Wearne officiating, and burial will be in
Riverside cemetery.
