Name originally spelled MULLIN. Known as "Bud" (per Aunt Blanche). Was pilot and steamboat Captain on Kentucky and Ohio rivers for Corps of Engineers (sternwheeler USS James Gregory). Twin sister (Mary E.) lived in California? Never owned a house. Was living near New Liberty, Owen, KY, at 1860 census; Cane Run District, Jefferson, KY, at 1880 census. Lived in Carrollton, KY (Houghton House Hotel) c.1898-1901; Joppa, IL about 1902; Paducah, KY 1907; 2203 W. Chestnut St., Louisville KY in 1913,"Capt.", (City Directory). Later Frankfort. Suffered stroke ("apoplexy") on board USS James Gregory at Valley View on Kentucky River; died while being driven to hospital in Lexington, KY by son William. Body removed to Frankfort KY on 13 Apr 1923 by undertaker C.A. Baker of Lexington KY.
Per Mrs Rutter of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen, "Way's Steam Towboat Directory" mentions the Hornet (p. 99) and the Iron Duke (p. 106) but does not mention Merritt Newton Mullen.

NEWSPAPERS (The Carrollton Democrat, Carrollton, KY)
2 Feb 1884: "Bud Mullen and Noble Pryor are the pilots [on the Hornet], and two more agreeable, more popular or more competent men could not be found on the water."
17 May 1884: Cash Claxon has replaced Bud Mullen as pilot on the Hornet. Bud Mullen will be pilot on the Maggie Harper while Charlie Supplee is on two weeks rest.
23 Aug 1884: "Bud Mullen has been here a few days, waiting to take position on the U. S. dredge boat, Iron Duke, which has recently been built for the Kentucky River and which is expected to arrive in a day or two."
6 Jun 1885: "The U. S. dredge boat arrived from Cincinnati, Tuesday, and passed into the Kentucky. Bud Mullen, the handsome pilot, took charge of the wheel on her arrival here."
14 Nov 1885: "Capt Bud Mullen took the Dora to High Bridge the other day. This is the first boat that has been to High Bridge for five years."
