Leo Bessette
Leo Bessette was born on January 24, 1932, in St. Johnsbury, VT, and passed away peacefully at home on October 1, 2007, after a two battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Janet of 55 years; and his five children, Tom, Dan, Rick, Joy and Paul and their spouses. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and his son, Michael.
Leo achieved many great things in his life. He had a very eventful career in law enforcement, as well as owning his own business as a young man along with his brother John. He always had many great stories to tell that everyone enjoyed. Leo was an avid golfer that he enjoyed almost daily. He even got a "hole in one" on No. 15 at the Eureka Muni Golf Course.
Leo will be remembered for many things. He never walked by a homeless person without buying them a cup of coffee or giving them something to eat. He often said, "We all started out in this world the same." But most of all his greatest achievement was being a grandfather to his ten grandchildren. He made a point of attending all their sporting events and cheering them on. People always said they could hear pepei (as he was called in French) yell, "That a boy" when his grandsons made a soccer goal or a home run.
He will be dearly missed by all.
Thank you to the caregivers that made it possible for Leo to remian at home: Kathy, Angela, Maria, Karen, Roger, Marion, Carol and Shelly and the staff at Hospice. Thank your also to Karen, his neighbor for always being available and Lima's Pharmacy for always accommodating our needs.
There will be a memorial mass held in his honor on Saturday, October 6th at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Chruch in Eureka.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Humboldt.
Arrangments are under the care of Peirce Mortuary, 707 H Street, Eureka, CA.
