James L. Bessette, 72
GARDNER - James L. Bessette, 72, of 20 Baker St. died yesterday in Henry Heywood Memorial Hospital after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Jennie (Sokolowski) Bessette; two sons, James L. Bessette Jr. of Gardner and David Bessette of Lewiston, Maine; two brothers, Norman and Leo Bessette, both of Fitchburg; four sisters, Evelyn Rounds of Sparks, Nev., Janet Jenness of San Jose, Calif., Irene McGowen of Lynn and Esther Helie of Winchendon; two grandchildren. He was born in Fitchburg, son of Louis and Elizabeth (Bushman) Bessette, and lived there 20 years before moving to Gardner. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 7 stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars.
Mr. Bessette was a metal fabricator at General Electric Co. in Fitchburg before he retired in 1986. He was a member St. Joseph's Church, VFW Ovila Case Post 905 and the G.E. Quarter-Century Club.
The funeral will be held Saturday from Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 358 Pleasant St. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Flowers may be sent, or memorial contributions made to St. Joseph's Church Renovation Fund, 358 Pleasant St., Gardner,01440.
