O.S. Bassett was born in New Berlin, Chenango Co., N.Y., October 13, 1840, and lived in his native town until he came to Kansas in 1873. He located in Newton, February 28, 1873, and was engaged in jewelry business five years, and in land and insurance business about two years. Since the latter part of December, 1880, he has been doing a drug and insurance business. For two years prior to April, 1882, he was City Treasurer, and for the four years preceding, was City Clerk. He has also served as Alderman. He is a member of A.F. & M., Blue Lodge and Chapter, having been both treasurer and secretary of the Lodge, and is also a member of I.O.O.F., Subordinate Lodge and Encampment. He was married in New Berlin, December, 1862, to Addie Munn, also a native of that town. They have four children - Floyd L., Flora M. and Lewis C., all born in New Berlin, and George R., born in Newton, Kan.
