LANDMARKS OF STEUBEN COUNTY, NEW YORK (1896)
Bassett, Fred L., was born in the town of Independence, Allegany
county, N.Y., August 21, 1855. Baylis S. Bassett, his father, was bo
Vermont, June 9, 1821, and came to Allegany county with his father, who
purchased 100 acres of land. Baylis S. Bassett came to Bennett's Creek in the
town of Canisteo in 1866, where he purchased 430 acres of land, which is still
kept in the family. He married Ester Crandall, by whom he had seven children,
Will C., Frank M., Fred L., Byron S., Lottie M., George C., and B. Shefield.
Fred L. is a farmer, and married Velma C. Krusen, daughter of Daniel Krusen,
of Greenwood, by whom he had three children, Lottie J., Ray L., and Earl.

FREMONT (Steuben County, New York) -- Mildred L. Burley, 84, of State Route
21, entered into rest Sunday (July 28, 2002) at McAuley Manor (Hornell,
Steuben County, New York) following a short illness.
Mrs. Burley was born July 20, 1918 in Canisteo to Charles and Pearl
Miller Bassett. She married Leon Burley on July 25, 1936 in Bath, who
predeceased her in 1972.
She was also predeceased by a son Charles in January 2002 and a
brother George Bassett.
Mrs. Burley worked for several years under the Green Thumb Program at
the N.Y.S. Veterans Service Agency in Hornell and the Cancer Society in
Hornell. She had previously worked at the Wildwood B.O.C.E.S. Campus in
Hornell and worked in the cafeteria for many years at Arkport Central School
and then as a teacher's aide at Arkport. She was also a member of the
Haskinsville Garden Club and Fremont Grange.
She is survived by six sons, Francis (Rosemary) Burley of Arkport,
Dale (Marcia) Burley of Canisteo, Duane (Sandra (Burley) of Newark, Del. Alan
(Lori) Burley of Bath, Calvin (Nellie Jo) Burley of Norfolk, Va. and Ne
(Robin) Burley of Arkport; one daughter, Arlene (Rodney) Alexander of Arkport;
a daughter-in-law, Shirley Burley of Wayland; one sister, Vera (Fred) Mitchell
of Canisteo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12-3 pm.m at the H.P.
Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo, where funeral and
committal services will be held immediately following calling hours at 3 p.m.
with the Rev. Michael Gallant and Daniel Jones officiating.
Burial will be in the Fremont Cemetery in Stephen Mill

Charles L. Burley
Charles L. Burley, age 61 of 7790 Wayland/Springwater died Wednesday
January 30, 2002 at his home. Charlie was born April 27, 1940 in Hornell the
son of Leon and Mildred Bassett Burley and resided in Hornell his early life.
He married the former Shirley Shepard on April 12, 1963 in Fremont, NY. For
the past 30 years he resided in the Springwater-Wayland area. Prior to
retiring in 1998 he was employed for over 24 years with the Eastman Kodak Co.
of Rochester. He also was a Rural Route Carrier for the Rochester Democrat &
e-Chronicle Newspaper for many years. A 10 year U.S. Navy Veteran he served
in Viet Nam as hospital Corpsman. After retiring he spent winters in Florida
and totally enjoyed a part time job as a Walmart greeter there. Pre-deceased
by his son; Charles A. Burley in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 38 years
Shirley, 1 son; Kenneth (Susan) Rurley of Atlanta, NY and a daughter; Angela
(Cory) Spencer of Wayland. His mother; Mildred Burley of Fremont, 3
grandchildren; Brian Burley of Dansville, Heather Burley & Alicia Burley both
of Atlanta, 1 sister; Arlene (Rodney) Alexander of Fremont, 6 brothers;
Francis (Rose) Burley of Jacksonville, Fla., Dale (Marsha) Burley of Canisteo,
Dwane (Sandra) Burley of Delaware, Calvin (Nellie Jo) Burley of Virginia, Alan
(Laurie) Burley of Howard, and Neil (Robin) Burley of Fremont. many nieces and
nephews. Friends called Monday at St. George-Stanton Funeral Home in Wayland.
Funeral Services were conducted at the close of calling. Reverend George Davis
officiating. Interment will be Richmond Hill Cemetery, Honeoye. Contributions

Wayland Ambulance Corps, West Naples Street, Wayland, NY 14572.
George William Teribury, son of Franz Segal and Oessa S. (Doty) Teribury, was
born 17 May 1913 in Greenwood, Steuben County, New York. He married Gladys
Virginia Ordway, daughter of Harold P. and Eva R. (Bassett) Ordway, on 10 Oct
1936 in Canisteo, Steuben County, New York. Gladys was born in 1918. George
died 21 Mar 1965 in the OLV Hospital, Lackawanna, NY.
Oletha Lillian Teribury, daughter of Franz Segal and Oessa S. (Doty) Teribury,
was born 12 Jul 1919 in Greenwood, Steuben County, New York. She married
Robert Bassett Ordway, son of Harold P. and Eva R. (Bassett) Ordway, on 8 Jul
1938 in Greeenwood, Steuben County, New York. Robert was born in 1917. She
married (2) Harold Tyler on 12 Sep 1947 in Canisteo, Steuben County, New York.
Oletha died 10 Jun 1974 in North Tonawanda, New York.
