Lillie Elizabeth DuCharme was born on August 30, 1917, in Little Canada, MN, to Peter Remi DuCharme and Elizabeth Marie Bessette DuCharme. Lillie was nine years old when she knew she wanted to be a sister, so at the young age of sixteen she began a new way of living, and received a new name as she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Monica earned a BA in Elementary Education from the College and the College of St. Catherine, and received an MED from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Sister Monica taught at St. Helena and St. Charles Borromeo in Minneapolis. In St. Paul, she taught at Church of the Nativity, St. Columba, Blessed Sacrament, and St. Patrick. She was principal of St. Michael's in St. Paul. She also taught at St. Michael in Grand Forks, ND and at Holy Redeemer in Marshall, MN. Even as she retired, Sister Monica generously offered her gifts to the community by volunteering wherever there was a need. Her joyful presence, her deep faith and welcoming smile will be treasured and remembered by all who loved her. Preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Elizabeth (Bessette), brothers Ernest, Walter and Andrew, and her sister Phyllis (Hanson), niece Yvonne Hanson, and nephew Rodney Hanson. She is survived by nieces Charlene DuCharme, Denise Hanson, and LisaAnn Martin, nephews Pierre DuCharme, Richard DuCharme, William DuCharme, Ronald Hanson, Russell Hanson, and many grand nieces and nephews.
