Harold L. Bassett, 53, Noted Tech Researcher
Harold L. Bassett, a principal research engineer at Georgia Tech who did important work on high-temperature electronic materials, died of a respiratory disease Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was 53. Mr. Bassett had been ill for about five years, according to a family member. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Arlington Memorial Park. Mr. Bassett was internationally known for his work on dielectric material properties, according to Albert P. Sheppard, Georgia Tech associate vice president for research. Mr. Bassett was a member of a Tech team that tested materials in 1974 at the world's largest solar furnace in the south of France, at the invitation of the French government. The team identified materials able to withstand high temperatures and still transmit electrical energy. The materials since have been used in the nose cones of space shuttles and U.S. missiles, according to Sheppard. "More recently, Mr. Bassett headed a group measuring the reflectivity of various radar targets like airplaines, tanks and ships to enable us to understand how to develop better radar, and defend against enemy radars," Sheppard said. Mr. Bassett's work was cited by four major speakers recently at a Washington, D.C. symposium on high-temperature electronic materials, sponsored by the Defense Department, according to Sheppard.
Harold Lane Bassett was born August 29, 1932, in Dunn, Louisiana. He received his bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech and his master's degree from Rollins College in Winter Park. Florida. Mr. Bassett joined Tech's Radar and Instrumentation Laboratory in 1967. He belonged to Clairmont Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a son, William L. Bassett of Atlanta; a daughter, Miss Jennifer Bassett of Atlanta; a stepmother, Mrs. Ada Bassett of Vicksburg, Mississippi; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Killian of Winnsboro, Louisiana; Mrs. Laura Buttman of El Paso, Texas; and Mrs. Jeanette Messina of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
