Betty Howell
Betty Howell Bassett, 85 - Carlsbad - Betty Howell Bassett, a longtime resident of Escondido and member of one of its earliest families, has died at the age of 85. Born in Colton, California on November 3, 1922, she moved to Escondido as an infant with her parents, Zora and Gordon Howell. She graduated from Escondido High School in 1940, and attended UC Berkley. During the war years, while working in a women's retail store in San Diego, she met a handsome Marine pilot from Missouri. That pilot, Don Bassett, became her husband and survived her today after 62 years of marriage. During the 1960s and 70s, Don and Betty founded a chain of women's clothing stores, based in Escondido, called Valdon's that catered to young women. Betty, in particular, was instrumental in developing its "Teen Board" which presented fashion shows throughout San Diego county, and worked with outstanding young women from local high schools who wanted to pursue a career in fashion. In 1964, Valdon's was honored with the Amy Award - a national award from Seventeen Magazine for outstanding achievement in the development of "the young American girl". (The Broadway chain came in second.) Betty continued her career for another ten years before retiring and will be remembered by many of "her girls" for her vivaciousness, her enthusiastic encouragement and her dynamic sense of style. In retirement, Betty and Don and lived in Solana Beach, Rancho Bernardo and most recently in Carlsbad near the beach which she loved so much. Their time was spent traveling the world, visiting over forty countries, making lasting friendships everywhere they went. Besides her husband, she is survived by sons, Frank, of San Clemente and Steve, of Cornwall, New York; their wives, Merrie and Anne; and five grandchildren, Cyril, Cameron, Samuel, Tyler and Emma. A graveside service is planned at 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Betty H. Bassett, 85, of Carlsbad died Saturday. She was born in Colton and was the owner of Valdon's clothing stores. Survivors include her husband, Don Bassett; sons, Frank Bassett of San Clemente and Steve Bassett of Cornwall;; and five grandchildren. Service: none announced. Inurnment: 2 p.m. today, Oak Hill Memorial Park, 2640 Glenridge Road, Escondido. Donations: Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest Street, Escondido, CA 92025. Arrangements: Alhiser-Comer Mortuary.
