GREENFIELD - Douglas R. Bassett, 90, of Summer Street, died Monday (1-27-14) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility.

Greenfield- Douglas Raymond Bassett, 90, of Summer Street died Monday 1/27/14 at the Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield. He was born in Greenfield on March 26, 1923, the son of Joseph and Sadie (Pratt) Bassett. Doug attended local schools in Greenfield and was a graduate of Greenfield High School.
Doug received his pilot?s license at the age of 18. He served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Radioman during World War II. He was an avid HAM radio operator with contacts all over the world.
He was employed by the United States Postal Service in Greenfield for 36 years before his retirement.
Besides his cherished wife of 69 years, Rita (DesRosiers) Bassett, Doug leaves behind five sons and three daughters: David of Greenfield, Marilyn Kuzmeskus of Deerfield, Donald of Leyden, Susan of Greenfield, Pamela of Feeding Hills, Michael of Montague, James of Bernardston and Robert of Montague. He also leaves behind a sister Marion Stone of Greenfield, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren as well as his many loving nieces and friends.
Doug was predeceased by his daughter, Patricia and his brother, Russell.
Doug was a loving husband and a devoted father who was a role model of hard work and perseverance. He was passionate about the things he loved and he had many interests. He enjoyed downhill skiing, sailing, and going on camping trips with his family. He especially enjoyed his retirement, wintering in Florida with his beloved wife Rita.
He set an example with his adventurous, fun-loving spirit for which his family will always be grateful.
A memorial service will be held Saturday 2/8/14 at 11am at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal Street, Greenfield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
