Joseph Bassett Jr. (Includes picture)
Asheville - Joseph "Joe" Yarnall Bassett, Jr., 86, an Asheville native and former Cullowhee resident, passed away on July 30, 2014 in Tucson, Ariz. surrounded by family and friends.
Joe was a Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. After receiving a PhD in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Joe worked at Union Carbide in West Virginia before accepting a position at Western Carolina University. He retired from WCU in 1991 after 27 years of teaching chemistry. He was a long time member of the Lions Club and Cullowhee United Methodist Church. Widely known for his kindness and generosity, he was loved by many.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Shipp Bassett of Tucson; daughters, Mary Zink (Christopher) of Salisbury, NC and Christine Bassett-Bancroft (Perry) of Cleveland, TN; grandchildren, Joseph Christopher Bassett, Sr. (Beth) of Greenville, NC and Katherine Zink of Salisbury; sister, Mary Davis of Tucson, four great-grandchildren and numerous step-relations.
He was preceded in death by wife, Lucretia Blankenship Bassett; mother, Mathilda Moore Bassett Robinson; father, Joseph Yarnall Bassett, Sr.; and stepfather, D. Lloyd Robinson.
A memorial service will be held at Cullowhee United Methodist Church, 416 Central Dr, Cullowhee, NC on September 7, 2014, at 2 PM. A reception will follow the service.
