HEALDTON - Services for Vera Lafern Bassett, 86, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Bethel Baptist Church with Bro. Milton Pledger and Bro. Jimmy May officiating. Interment will be at Mount Olive Cemetery.
Born Oct. 15, 1916, in Bellaire, Ill., to David and Mabel Wikle Downey, she died Nov. 9, 2002, in Healdton.
Married to Howard Leroy Bassett on Sept. 28, 1936, in Seminole, they moved to Healdton with their youngest son, Donald, in April of 1956. Vera, Howard and Donald were saved and baptized at Wirt Baptist Church, where she remained an active member until the church closed in 1993. She then joined the congregation at Bethel Baptist Church and kept her membership there through her remaining lifetime. Vera worked in the Dietary Department at the Healdton hospital from the day it opened until her retirement on Dec. 1, 1992.
She was loving and devoted to God, her family and her friends. Her smiles and wonderful meals will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, H.L. Bassett; parents; grandson, Ray Gene Bassett; infant sister, Betty Downey; and two brothers, Harold and Howard Downey.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Patricia Bassett, Healdton; daughter-in-law, Doris Bassett, Marine, Ill.; grandsons and wives, DeWayne and Susan Bassett, Roy and Stephanie Bassett, all of Healdton, Gary and Mary Bassett, Robert and Beverly Bassett, all of Marine, Ill.; and a granddaughter and husband, Jim and Gina Mistoler, Marine, Ill.
Bearers will be DeWayne Bassett, Roy Bassett, Gary Bassett, Bob Bassett, Richard Marrs and Phillip Keck. Honorary bearers are Kevin McGaha and John Carroll.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Spivey's Reser Funeral Home.
