HELEN W. BASSETT DIES AT FENNVILLE

Fennville - July 26 - Mrs. Helen W. Bassett, oldest member of t
Simpson Methodist church of Kalamazoo, died here Friday evening after a short
illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. M. Burpee.
Mrs. Bassett, the last survivor of a family of seven children, was
born in New York State in 1843 and came to Michigan in 1856. At that time her
trip from Kalamazoo to Middleville was made by stage over what is now US-131.
Marrying Melvin Bassett at Middleville in 1856, the couple came to
Kalamazoo a few years later where Mrs. Bassett became a member of the Simpson
Methodist church. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Bassett resided in
Kalamazoo until a few years ago when she came here to live with her daughter.
She is survived by three children., Mrs. Luella Burpee, M. Orlando
Bassett, and Charles Bassett; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Kalamazoo Simpson Methodist church
at 3:30 Monday afternoon with the Rev. Henry W. Ellinger and the Rev. A.S.
Williams officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
