Bert Austin Bassett was born in Grand Rapids, Ohio, December 30, 1878.
He is the son of Levi and Sarah (Adamson) Bassett.
On Monday, March 26, 1900 he left Ohio and started West. Walkin
riding and working for farmers along the way for periods of a few days to a
few months, arriving in Woodward, Woodward Co., Oklahoma in 190
His first job in Woodward, Ok was as an apprentice brick layer on the
then new Court House at 10th and Texas Avenue.
He took a job for Gerlach Hopkins Mercantile Company on March 2, 1902
in the grocery department and later was manager for several year
On October 4, 1903 he married Emma Jane Pulley. She was born in Iowa
on December 20, 1886 and came to Woodward, Ok with her parents in 1900. Her
family had the hotel, boarding house and stable known as "The Pulley House",
located in the 1200 block on 7th street.
Bert and Emma Bassett lived for almost 40 years in their home at 1524
6th Street (built just before their marriage). To them were born six children.

2. Edna Marie Bassett (b) January 6, 1907 in Woodward, Ok (d) November
1997 in Woodward, Ok.
3. Thelma Irene Bassett (b) April 26, 1910 in Woodward, Oklahoma (d)
in the early 1980's in Colorado City, Colorado.
4. Byron Austin Bassett (b) July 14, 1915 in Woodward, Ok. He is still
alive, living in California.
5. Doris Eileen Bassett (b) May 1, 1923 in Woodward, Ok (d) February
11, 1924 in Woodward, Ok of pneumonia.
6. Mary Maxine Bassett (b) April 19, 1929 in Woodward, Ok. She still
lives in Woodward, Ok.
In about 1905, Mr. Bassett filed on a claim about twenty miles
northwest of Woodward, Ok and built a half dugout on it where Mrs. Bassett and
the first child Viola lived for a year. Mr. Bassett walking to the claim

He continued working at Gerlach Hopkins until 1913, when he purchased
a frame business building on Main Street, and had it moved to the back of the
lot where they lived, 516 Oak Avenue, and it became Bassett's Grocery. A new
store building was built on the same location in the early 1930's. In more
recent times, this store has been known as "Orie's" and then "Blackie's" and
is now Orie's again.
Mr. Bassett continued to operate the store until he retired and moved
to California in 1943, except for several brief periods when he leased the
business to other individuals. During some of these periods, Mr. and Mr
Bassett and their youngest child, Mary Maxine Bassett, traveled over quite a
bit of the United States sightseeing, and also lived in San Antonio, Texas
for short periods several different times.
Mr. Bassett was a member of the Masonic Lodge, in which he became a
member of Woodward Volunteer Fire Department for twenty year
Mrs. Bassett always had a great interest in and derived enjoyment from
raising flowers. She was gifted in arranging them in attractive bouquets and
was very generous in providing arrangements for her church, people who were
ill and for friends and family for special occasions and entertaining. She was
a member of the First Christian Church, Royal Neighbors (and was a Past Oracle
of this organization), the Gladiolus Unit of Garden Clubs, and Order of the
Eastern Star. She also did a lot of handiwork, such as crochetin
Mr. Bassett died in California on February 14, 1948, of a Heart
Condition and was returned to Woodward, Ok for burial at Elmwood Cemetery.
Shortly after his death, Mrs. Bassett moved back to Woodward, Ok and lived at
1319 15th Street until her death December 31, 1968. She is also buri
Elmwood Cemetery.
