It was originally thought that Lucy Gillett (b. 25 Jan 1781) daughter of Seth Gillett & Anna neeThompson was the Lucy who married Elias Bassett. Information uncovered in 2002 has shown that this is not the case. The Seth and Anna Gillett family moved to Ulster (now Sullivan) County, New York. In 1790. Their daughter, Lucy would have been nine years old at that time.
Other evidence that Lucy Gillett - b. 11 Mar 1778, daughter of Azariah Gillett - is the one who married Elias Bassett comes from the following findings: Lucy's brother, Harlow Gillett (1799 ) has close ties to the Elias Bassett family. (See land transaction 17 Sep 1825 in Elias Bassett's notes.)
Continuation of names in the family: Elias & Lucy's 6th child is named Harlow G. (most likely Gillett) Bassett. Loren Elias Bassett (1809) and Rachel English named a son Harlow Gillett Bassett, and the name continues through several succeeding generations.
Several members of the Azariah Gillett family moved to Wyoming County, New York about the same time as Elias and Lucy Bassett; including: Betsey Gillett Dudley, a sister, and Elias, a brother.

DEATH: Lucy was alive when the 1840 census was taken, but she was not listed with the family when the 1850 census was taken. She must have died between 1840 and 1850. See census listings below.

In the 1790 census of Granby, Hartford, CT the Azariah Gillett household included: Male over 16 [likely Azariah age 46], 5 males under 16 [likely sons: Azariah Jr. 14, Isaac 9, Elias 7, Asa 4, & Hosea 1], and 2 females [likely wife, Lucy, 33 & dau., Lucy, 12].
In the 1800 census of Granby, Hartford, CT the Azariah Gillett household included: 1 male over 45 [likely Azariah Gillet 56], 1female over 45 [likely wife, Lucy 43], 1 female 16-25 [likely dau., Lucy 22], 2 males 16-25 [likely sons: Isaac 19 & Elias 17], 3 males 10-15 [likely sons: Asa 14, Hosea 11, & Abiather 8], 2 males under 10 [likely sons: Silas 4 & Harlow 1], and 1 female under 10 [likely dau., Betsey 7].
In the 1820 Census of Scott, Cortland, NY, p. 571 (BYU film #66) Lucy was between the age of 26 and 44 and included in the Elias Bassett household.
In the 1825 State Census of Scott, Cortland, NY (FHL film #843779) Lucy Bassett was one of the two females listed in the Elias Bassett household.
In the 1830 Census of Bennington, Genesee, NY, p.130 (BYU film #90) Lucy was between the age of 50 & 60 and included in the Elias Bassett household.
In the 1840 Census of Bennington, Genesee, NY, p.50 (BYU film #91) Lucy was between the age of 50 & 60 and included in the Elias Bassett household.
