Clark Bassett was born in Connecticut in 1810, and after a residence in Delaware County moved to the state of Virginia, thence to this town in 1853, where he settled on the farm now owned by his widow. He married Mary M. Hanford. Their children were Samuel C., Benjamin C., James W., Mary C., Matilda C., George S., and Emma N. Benjamin C. was born in Bedford, Virginia, August 24, 1846, and came to this town with his parents when seven years of age. He received his education in the common schools and in the business college at Elmira. For ten years he was engaged in stock raising in the west. He returned and engaged in business at Painted Post. His first wife was Alsatia Hitchcock, and his present wife Helen M. Lambert.
