Roger N. Bessette
NEW BEDFORD -- Roger N. Bessette, 86, of Dartmouth, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the widower of Mary C. (Caires) Bessette. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Noe and Ida (Coderre) Bessette, he spent his youth in New Bedford, lived in Wallingford, Conn., and Cape Coral, Fla., for 37 years. Mr. Bessette was an Army veteran having served during World War II, earning the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with five service stars. He saw battle in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a member of the 7th Field Artillery Association. He was employed as a pipefitter with Cytec Industries Inc., formerly American Cyanamid, in Wallingford for 25 years, retiring in 1970. He was also employed as a meter reader for the Cape Coral Water Department for nine years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid sports enthusiast and die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. He also enjoyed coin collecting. Survivors include a sister, Alice Belanger of New Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late Doris C. Roy and Ernest Bessette. His funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the Brooklawn Funeral Home, 15 Irvington Court, followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony Church, New Bedford. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
