W.J. Messier Teacher, Dies at Age of 66
CHICOPEE – Wilfred J. Messier, 66, of 7 Gilmore St., language teacher in Chicopee Comprehensive high School, died Monday in Mercy Hospital.
He was born in Adams Feb. 28, 1899, son of the late Clovis and Albina (Bessette) Messier, and had lived here for the past 30 years. He was educated in local schools and the Montreal Seminary. He received a bachelor of science degree from Assumption College, Worcester, and a master’s degree from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, O., in 1959. He was a teacher of French and Latin in Chicopee Comprehensive High School for the past five years and prior to that he was an electrical engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corp. for 33 years.
Mr. Messier was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 275, and a member of World War I Barracks, Elks Lodge1849 of this city, League of the Sacred Heart of the Assumption Church and the Chicopee Teachers Association. He was a school committeeman here for 12 years and past president of the Franco-American Society of Chicopee.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Lucille (Desrochers) Messier, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Theresa Roy and Mrs. Gertrude Ringuelle, both of Chicopee Falls; three sons, Wilfred J. and Charles E., both of this city, and Bernard L. of Chicopee Falls; a sister, Mrs. Dora Kowalewski of Catonsville, Md., and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at the Grise funeral home Friday at 8, with a solemn requiem high mass in Assumption Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, South Hadley. Calling hours will be today and Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10.
