A native of Perquimans County, North Carolina, he was a son of Mrs. Josephine Spruill Bass and the late James Stephen Bass. He lived here 23 years. He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church and a sheet metal worker for the Army Corps of Engineers 27 years. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edna Layden Bass; two daughters, Mrs. Harriet Josephine Martin of Norfolk and Miss Patricia Ann Bass of Great Bridge; a son, James Melvin Bass of Great Bridge; four sisters, Mrs. Agnes Elliott and Mrs. Mabel Sawyer of Hertford, North Carolina, Mrs. Katherine Farmer of Norfolk and Mrs. Iris Pike of South Norfolk; two brothers, Erie Bass of Norfolk and James Steven Bass Jr., of Hertford, North Carolina; and two grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted in Graham Funeral Home, Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park.
