- Harrison went to Michigan with his parents in 1839.
He was reared on the home farm and received a district-school
education, after which he attended Ludding's Academy. He then entered t
Michigan University at Ann Arbor in 1850, graduating in 1854 from the literary
department. After finishing his own course at college, he engaged for some
time in teaching, his first year being spent at Tecumseh in teaching languages
and his work as a pedagogue extending from 1855 to 1860 in Illinois and
Michigan, during which time he was also actively interested in the study of
civil engineering. Beginning in 1861, he engaged in farming in Lodi township,
but in May of 1891, he retired and moved to Saline, Michigan.
An ardent Republican in his political belief, he was a candidate for
the position of Representative from his district in 1890. His distri
largely democratic, and he lost the election. He held various local offices,
having been President of School Board. Mrs. Bassett is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church. He owned 160 acres of well-improved land ju
outside the corporate limits of Saline, Michigan.

Harrison W. Bassett, son of Ira and Marcena (Hunt) Bassett, ear
pioneers of Washtenaw county, was born in Onondaga Co., N.Y., July 8, 1832. In
1839 he came with his parents to this county, where he grew to manhood. He
received his educational training at Michigan University, graduating from the
literary department in 1854. He was then employed as Professor of Languages,
in Tecumseh, Mich., for five years. At the expiration of this time he went to
Illinois and Iowa, where he was engaged as a civil engineer for a number of
years. He taught school in DeWitt, Iowa, for two years, and then returned to
this county, where he has since been engaged in farming, and breeding t
celebrated Spanish Merino sheep. On Nov. 12, 1862, he married Mrs. Elsie M.
Fowler, daughter of Norman G. and Altena Fowler, old residents of this county.
They have 1 child - Clifford E. Mr. Bassett owns 157 acres of fine farming
land, located near Saline. In politics he is Republican.
