Obituary
John Chandler Bassett was born in Bennington County, Vermont, January 26, 1826, and died in Andover, Aug. 17, 1909. He was the fifth child of John Chandler Bassett and Martha St. John. In 1828 the parents moved to Independence and left their two year old child for a time with his grandparents at Walton, in Delaware Co. He afterwards joined the family at the Independence farm where much of his life was spent. In early manhood he joined the Independence S.D.B. church, of which he has been a consistent member of more than 60 years. During all this time he has led an earnest consecrated Christian life, which has endeared him to all who knew him.
Sept. 30, 1850, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Reading, who survives him. Six children blessed this union, of whom four are now living: Henry K. Bassett of Independence, T. Eugene Bassett of Oswego, Thomas Bassett of Andover, and Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter of Elizabethton, Tenn.
In 1882 Mr. Bassett moved to Alfred to give the advantages of a higher education to his two younger children. Ten years later they removed to Andover where they have since resided. Many people have enjoyed the hospitality of the home of ?Father? and ?Mother? Bassett, as they are lovingly known by their friends.
Mr. Bassett had been in failing health for some time, and on the morning of Aug. 17 he quietly fell asleep. The family gathering at his home on Aug. 19 was a sorrowful one, but there was, no doubt, a joyful reunion in Heaven. Besides his parents, eight brothers and sisters and two children had preceded him to the Heavenly home. Five brothers and sisters are living, as follows: Mrs. Betsey Kingsbury of Rushford, N.Y., Mrs. Julia Chrisman of Walton, George H. Bassett of Woodhull, Francis M. Bassett of Andover and Mrs. Eliza E. Stillman of Boston, Mass.
The Rev. Ira Lee Cottrell, a former pastor, conducted the funeral service, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Boynton of the Baptist church. Mr. Cottrell gave a helpful talk on Immortality, and paid a fine tribute to the character of Mr. Bassett. The interment was in the family lot at Independence.
