George P. Cushing, treasurer and general manager of the Nantask
Beach Steamboat Company and known to thousands of patrons of the line, died
yesterday at his home on Main street, South Hingham, aged 64. He had be
identified with the company for half a century and in its service worked from
the bottom of the ladder to the top.
He left school when young and sold papers, first on the streets of
Hingham, his native town, and then on the boats, which docked not far from his
home. He was a successful newsboy, too, and attracted the attention of his
employers early by his energy.
His rise was rapid. Even when a young man he held a position of
importance with the company.
Mr. Cushing was born in Hingham Aug. 7, 1848, one of five sons of Pyam
and Harriet (Wilder) Cushing, both natives of the town. In 1873 he was married
to miss Harriet A. Bassett of Hingham. She and a daughter, Ruth, survive him.
