Charles M. Bassett
Charles M. Bassett, one of Lowville's well known and popular
residents, passed away at his home on Park avenue Sunday evening aft
illness of several years. Mr. Bassett sustained a stroke of paralysis four
years ago, and since then had been gradually declining.
Charles M. Bassett was a son of Norton and Clemenza Mills Bassett, and
was born on the homestead farm at Glenfield, January 31, 1841. He was educated
at Lowville Academy and thereafter taught school for several years. December
30, 1868, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Arthur, daughter of
the late Alfred Arthur, of Martinsburg. During the Civil war, Mr. Bassett was
an employee of the Black River National Bank of Lowville. He was an ardent and
life-long Republican and represented the town of Martinsburg on the Board of
Supervisors.
For many years Mr. Bassett conducted his farm at Glenfield in which he
was successful, and at the same time did a great deal of surveying. Several
years ago he retired from active work and removed to Lowville. He was a
prominent member of Lowville Grange and held various offices therein,
including master.
Mr. Bassett was of a pleasant, kindly disposition, was widely known and
liked, and his death will bring regret to many. He leaves surviving his wife,
a daughter, Miss Erma Bassett and a son, Dr. H. Arthur Basset
The funeral was held yesterday from his late home on Park avenue, Rev.
Elmer E. Dresser, officiating.
