He operated a large farm and had a charcoal business, which he ran along with his father. He and his father were also involved in road-building. They would provide teams and wagons with drivers to do the hauling. He was working on one of these road-building projects when he became ill with Lypo Malarial Fever from which he died. He was only 11 years old when his mother died. The father never remarried, and they continued to live and farm near Bourneville, Ohio, until after the summer of 1858. His oldest sister, Frances Sibyl Servis, who married William Henderson Dancy, had moved to Fulton County, Illinois. In a letter to them he tells of losing their crops due to flooding in the spring and early summer of 1858.
The children John, Frank, Abigail, Willie, Milton, and Samuel are all buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lewiston, Illinois.
