Deaths And Funerals
Sudden Death of William T. Bassett, of This City, Yesterday Afternoon
William T. Bassett died suddenly at 2:30 o?clock yesterday afternoon in Whipple & Crippen?s furniture store on West Main street. For the past four years he was been afflicted with a spinal disease and for some time has been in the habit of coming down town two or three times a week for the purpose of taking medical treatment. Yesterday afternoon he came down in the street car attended by his grandson, Clifton P. Williamson. He was taken very sick in the car and was removed with great difficulty to the Whipple & Crippen store. Dr. Hoard was called and did all in his power, but he expired in about fifteen minutes.
William T. Bassett was born in Aurora, Cayuga county, N.Y., January 22, 1919, and was for over forty years a merchant of the town of Rushville, Yates county. He came to Rochester in 1870 and engaged with Warfield & Williams in the oil business, the firm afterward being Williams & Bassett. About 1878 he sold out his interest and bought out the City Laundry which he conducted until about four years ago. Since then he has been in failing health and has not been in active in business.
For twenty-three years he had been a member of Plymouth Church. He was a man who was loved and respected by all who knew him. His only son A.M. Bassett, will be remembered by many as the secretary of the Dunlap Manufacturing Company of this city, who expired about two years ago in his office while in the act of signing a check.
Mr. Bassett was married in 1847 to Miss Carolina Millard, of Rushville, N.Y., who survives him. He leaves one brother, Joseph S. Bassett, of Sandwich, Mass., one sister, Mrs. Harriet S. Riley of Boston, Mass., and one daughter, Mrs. William A. Williamson, of this city.
The time of the funeral will be announced later.
