- Estimated birth dates for Zachariah range from 1741 to 1760, however if he was 93 years of age when he died in 1853 his birth date was likely 1760/61.
From "REVW VETERANS WHO LIVED IN BRIDGEWATER, VT" we have,
" Zachariah Bassett, born ca 1760, served eight month enlistment from Milton Mass 1775:
1776 service same as brother Hayward. Fall 1778 enlisted United States Ship
Alliance commanded by Capt Peter Lundais. The Alliance took a prize and
Zachariah was one of the crew employed to take the prize ship to Brest,
France.
However, a British Privateer captured the prize ship and took it to
Plymouth, England, where the American crew was sent to Mill Prison. Some of
the Americans escaped but the records show that Zach' Bassett "staid" until he
was released at the end of the war.
Married Priscilla Damon, sister of his bro Hayward's wife and they too
came to Bridgewater in 1789. Was active in Bridgewater affairs until 1838 when
they moved to Waterbury, Vt. where he died 1853, age 93."
